Engaging Lectures Using Technology

By Dr. Paul Fishell

Great lecturers create comfortable learning environments, present students with varied forms of learning material, and emphasize key points during lecture. In this article, techniques in ZOOM will be discussed on creating environment, presenting learning materials, and emphasizing key points of the lecture.

Creating a Good Classroom Environment

Lecture should be comfortable for the speaker and listeners. Hunkering over the computer creates tension for the lecturer and the listener. Moving away from the hunkering position lowers tension on the speaker. One’s hardware can allow the teacher to relax more when lecturing.

Within ZOOM, options exist to avoid headphones. Wired headphones puts the lecturer on a leash and dehumanizes the lecturer. One way to avoid feedback is to use speakers or microphones not on the same device. One can situate a directional microphone between the speakers and lecturer. Or, a Bluetooth may be synced to computer or a phone with meeting audio.

Another way to free up the lecturer is to positioned webcam on a music stand. Then, it can be raised, lowered, or pan the office of the lecturer. Having a portable camera allows the lecturer to write on a physical whiteboard with a clear view of the whiteboard. By using a webcam, the teacher is now teaching like Mr. Rodgers. Mr. Rodgers taught his students while moving about his room, which happened to have a camera. Whether standing or walking about, a lecturer in ZOOM may now speak with their hands and use body language. The portable camera allows the lecturer to create online an environment similar to traditional classrooms.

Curriculum Presentation

ZOOM allows the teacher to share one’s own desktop. Whatever slides a teacher has prepared may be shared. Presentation slides are naturally formatted for topical outlines. Bulleted slides require students to listen for information to ‘fill in’ the outlines. Slides guide the lecture rather than give the lecture. Slides that contain all the information negates the need for the student to listen.

Change is good. Change creates mini-learning curves. Learning curves studies show

Reaching Kansas City During a Pandemic

By Dr. Paul Fishell

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (Luke 4:18-19).

No one expected the country to be shut down. “Ministry During a Pandemic” was not one of the courses that Pastor Adam Brown took at SUM Bible College and Theological Seminary. So what does one do in ministry during a pandemic? To answer this question, let us look at the ministry of Reach KC.

Standing in line at a gas station, Brown is asked about his “Transformed” shirt by the clerk. “My father died of HIV from drug use when I was three years old. I grew up fatherless and fell into the drug lifestyle. In prison, I cried out to God. My life has been transformed by Jesus. I completed bible college and now I am a pastor.” His 30 second testimony leads to a conversation about his church. People identify with Brown’s story and come to Reach KC to see their own lives transformed.

Upon graduating from SUM in 2017, Brown aligned himself with Reach Missouri to plant a church. City Reach Kansas City was launched September 17, 2017. After one year, the congregation had to move. Through a series of miraculous events, an agreement was reached and the congregation moved to the Blue Valley neighborhood on the Eastside.

Operating as Reach KC, the church has always had a vision to “Reach the One.” The church hosts “Stop the Violence” and “Pray for our Hood” events in the community parks. The church has adopted a local elementary school giving gifts, volunteering, and mentoring. In the summer of 2019, Reach KC joined with the USDA to provide a summer lunch feeding program for school age students. The church uses its Youtube channel and Facebook to maintain presence online. The church promotes HobMob and CABB Musik concerts in Kansas City. Whatever it takes…the mission is to reach Kansas City.

So how does one minister during a pandemic? The same way, with some modifications. Reach KC has to reach Kansas City. In Missouri, “stay at home” orders have made allowances for essential personnel to be out in the community. Reach KC has made itself essential. It immediately started its summer feeding program when schools shut down. Serving Monday through Saturday, lunch sacks are prepared and distributed to the community. Statistics show our neighborhood’s need: 47% of the Blue Valley neighborhood is below the poverty level, 37% of the neighborhood are school aged children, 23% are single mother families, and the average size of a household is 8.7 persons per home. Reach KC is 1 essential in our community. We feed the many children in our neighborhood. At this point, the church has been giving away between 250-300 lunches per day. This practical expression of the love of Jesus and Reach KC has touched the hearts of the community.

The presence in the digital world has expanded. Reach KC began to use Sling Studio to live broadcast entire services on their Youtube channel. Devotions continued on Facebook lives. ZOOM meetings for leadership and small group Bible studies moved to this platform. Reach KC’s internet presence is seen daily.

As talk of opening the country begins, the question shifts to: How do we do ministry after the Covid shut down? We keep reaching. Reach KC is planning to “relaunch” the church.

One real set back of the shut down has been the lack of community. About 90% of Reach KC has struggled with addictions. Shut down has been hard on the congregation of Reach KC. Isolation leads to depression. Depression leads to relapses. Therefore, Reach KC needs to be together. They need to work side by side in outreaches and feeding programs. They need to smile and enjoy good Hip Hop music. Reach KC needs to reach the one and hold them accountable. During this pandemic, too many phone calls and text messages have gone unanswered… Reach KC needs to be called home.

While Brown did not take “Ministry During a Pandemic,” he caught a vision to reach the one. Brown often references Luke 4:18-19 as the ministry of Jesus. “If that is his ministry, it should be ours.” Preach the acceptable year of the Lord. Set captives free. Reach the one!

Essential Needs

By Melanie Francis

Do Not Worry

25“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life?[f] 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.

34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day’s own trouble be sufficient for the day.

Matthew 6:25-34

A puff of smoke escapes my lips in the pre-dawn hours of my suburban northern California town. A large crowd gathers to wait, many for over an hour. A clerk counts patrons, allowing twenty-five to enter every ten minutes. We are all doing the same thing- hunting toilet paper. It amazes me how quickly my perception of “essential need” changes. Two weeks ago I was perfectly content with the package of toilet paper sitting in my cabinet. I had no way of knowing that I would have to wake before dawn every morning because I was so desperate for something so basic.

Jesus knew that this desperation was a part of the human response to a crisis. God is not surprised by the coronavirus pandemic of 2020, in fact, Jesus said, “do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or (vs. 31)”. . .  ‘What shall we use for toilet paper? Okay, I added that part, but you get the point. Jesus is still aware of my essential needs and it is best to choose not to be anxious but to rely on him to supply those needs because “your heavenly Father knows that you need them all” (vs 32). Does that mean that I don’t get up at 5 am to hunt toilet paper? Probably not, but it does mean that I can walk in trust rather than worry. It also means that I should keep my essential needs in perspective.

It is in times of difficulty that individuals and communities refocus. Jesus’ central thought in his discussion about worry is found in verse 33, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.”. I am reminded of my need for toilet paper multiple times a day, but do I remember that a more essential need is “seeking the kingdom of God and His righteousness” during this time? What does that look like for me as my family and I are under a “shelter in place” order? Am I seeking what God identifies as my essential needs as actively as I am seeking toilet paper each day? What does that even look like in this season of gathering limits and social distancing? Am I willing to find creative alternatives, like buying Kleenex, to meet those essential spiritual needs?

Our current situation presents us with an unprecedented opportunity to explore alternative ways of being the church of Jesus Christ in the world when the church buildings cannot be accessed. What are you doing to seek the kingdom of God right now? How are you and your church creatively meeting essential needs? How are you seeking and displaying the righteousness of God? How are you meeting essential needs in the community right now? I invite you to join the discussion. Let’s talk.

SUM LOCATIONS

Mission Statement

SUM Bible College and Theological Seminary (SUM) equips indigenous leaders from America and the nations of the world by offering an affordable theological education combining academic instruction with practical hands-on ministry and personal mentorship. Our mission empowers these leaders to be instruments of change in their communities.

“Empowering Leaders for the Fivefold Ministry”

Houma, LA/Code: LAHMA17

SUM Bible College Cohort- Houma

Located in South Louisiana near New Orleans, the Houma cohort is a site of SUM Bible College & Theological Seminary, and is filled with a rich heritage and history. Bayou Blue Assembly of God started its humble beginnings in 1924 on the porch of Telemac Matherne and grew to a 900+ member congregation. The heritage of the church has played an active role in Pentecostal history in the Louisiana Assemblies of God. Through leadership and mentoring, our students get the opportunity to have access to the large urban communities and inner city outreaches. Our students enjoy partnering with local ministries as well as growing and developing their ministry calling. It is the heart of our Visionary Leader Pastor Patrick Thompson, to develop and release ministry leaders who are equipped and ready to lead the next generation.

What to expect

When studying at SUM-Houma, our students can be engaged in children, youth, and adult ministries. Students will grow in their outreach skills by plugging into our homeless ministry, urban church “House of Hope”, and our student bus and school ministry. Students will learn all helps, media and sound skills needed to work in these departments. Students called to worship will be trained and serve on the student and church worship teams.

FINANCIAL AID

Types of Financial Aid at SUM Bible College

SUM Bible College and Theological Seminary offer low tuition.  Financial aid is available should students need assistance.  Below are some of the financial aid programs available.  For additional types of aid, please also check our scholarship and Veterans Assistance links on this website.

  • Grants
  • Work-study programs
  • Scholarships

Federal Grants

Unlike loans, grants do not need to be repaid. Two types of Federal grants available are:

Federal Pell Grant
This need-based grant is available only to undergraduate students that demonstrate financial need based on completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  Award amounts are based on your Student Aid Index (SAI), the Cost of Education, and number of credit hours you are attending as determined by your FAFSA and the Financial Aid Office.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant
This Federal need-based grant is available to undergraduate, Pell-Grant-eligible students that demonstrate financial need according to a federal eligibility formula.  Award amounts are based on a student’s “Student Aid Index (SAI),” the Cost of Education, and number of credit hours.  Funds are limited funds and awarded to Pell Grant recipients that demonstrate a high financial need based on their SAI.

Work-Study

Federal Work Study (FWS)
FWS is a need-based financial aid program designed to assist students with employment opportunities on campus or within the community. Funds are limited.  This is a regular paid position in which a student will receive a bi-weekly paycheck. The FWS earnings are taxable; however, are excluded in the need calculation on the FAFSA.

Requirements for the Federal Work-Study program:

  • To be eligible for a FWS work-study award, applicants must complete a FAFSA, demonstrate financial need after all other aid applied, and be enrolled in six or more credit hours.
  • Applicants must have a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average and be in good academic standing
  • Students cannot begin work until all personnel paperwork has been completed (I-9, W4, etc.)
  • Students cannot work more than 20 hours a week while classes are in session
  • Students must remain enrolled in at least six credit hours during the time that they are employed
  • Students must submit accurate time sheets on a regular and timely basis
  • Student cannot exceed their work-study award

Veterans Benefits

From federal tuition assistance to the Montgomery GI Bill and Post 9/11 GI Bill, there are many ways for active-duty service members, veterans, and their dependents to get financial support to help pay for their tuition at SUM Bible College & Theological Seminary. Our Financial Aid office will help you understand the military and veteran funding available to you.

Vocational Rehabilitation

Vocational rehabilitation (VR) programs are state-run, federally state-run programs that offer a way for people with mental and physical disabilities to get the help they need to become more independent and go back to work.

To apply for VR services, contact the agency in your state that administers the program. (Some states Department of vocational rehabilitation falls under the Health and Human Services agency, while others come under the Department of Education.) Also, your local Social Security field office can help you find the closest VOC rehab office in your state.

Scholarships

A scholarship is a form of “gift” assistance you can apply for that does not have to be repaid. Scholarships may be counted towards your total financial aid award package and used to meet your financial need.

Most all scholarships require you to complete their application, write an essay, have references, or have a certain GPA.  Check with each donor for their specific criteria.

Please see the scholarship page for additional information. In addition, please check with your high school and congregation on what scholarship opportunities they may offer.

Scholarships – SUM Bible College and Theological Seminary

Consider the SUM Payment Plan:

If your full-term tuition would be too much for you all at once, consider the four $400 payments per trimester. For more information contact the Business Office at businessoffice@sum.edu.

Congregational/Church Scholarships:

Check with your local congregation to see if they offer scholarships or tuition assistance for its members. You may also wish to visit private scholarship searches like ScholarshipOwl: The fastest path to college scholarships

Third-Party Scholarships:

Thousands of dollars in potential scholarships go unclaimed every year. That’s money you could be using to pay for your tuition. You may search for third-party scholarships via our website at: Scholarships – SUM Bible College and Theological Seminary

Employer Paid Tuition Benefits:

Often our Partner Organizations will offer to pay the remaining tuition for their employees or members as part of a job training or educational benefit program. Check with your site to see if there is program funding available for you. Please email  businessoffice@sum.edu  to get it set up on your account.

Military TA & VA Benefits:

If you are an active-duty Servicemember or Veteran, a member of the National Guard or Reserves, or a qualified survivor or dependent, you may be eligible to receive Educational & Training funding from the Military Tuition Assistance program or the Post – 9/11 or Montgomery GI Bills. Visit vets.gov to determine your VA eligibility and apply or contact your base’s Educational Center for TA funding details.

Private Student Loans:

We highly recommend students not take out loans because we know that the future financial burden of taking on debt is not without risks. This is one reason why we don’t participate in the federal student loan program.

In instances where some students may need to obtain a loan to pay for living expenses, they are encouraged to pursue private student loan funding by visiting their local bank or a national student loan provider. You can find out more by performing a Google search or visit: Best Private Student Loan Rates 2025 | BestMoney  for more information on what to consider when looking for a private student loan and how to apply. Note: SUM does not refer to or can recommend any private student loan lenders.
